Back in high school, being a nerd wasn't exactly a ticket to the cool table. Our school wasn't crawling with D&D players or anime fans or kids who knew the Konami Code by heart. In fact, I'm pretty sure the entire geek population was just me. Which meant lunch was usually solo, group projects were a nightmare, and gym class was a weekly humiliation ritual.

But there were two groups that always had my back: the goths... and the metalheads.

Now, I didn't know it at the time, but metalheads? They're just nerds in disguise. Angry nerds, yes. Loud nerds, definitely. But under the battle vests and hair and Slayer patches? Deeply geeky souls with encyclopedic knowledge of obscure subgenres, warhammer armies, and Norse mythology. They never bullied me. They embraced me. And in return, I embraced the riffs.
